Each infantry division was assigned its own artillery support assets in the Regio Esercito, and although many of the artillery pieces and aircraft were outdated, they were nonetheless quite lethal under the right circumstances. Given the firepower these forward observers could bring to bear on their targets, their neutralization was a high priority to opposing commanders.
